    Excellent cd of 2 different club dates, 1 is on the east coast and somewhat laid back George Benson gets some great playing time with Jack mcduff, but the 2nd set is from San Francisco jazz workshop and full of energy and great playing, you can hear the difference in the drummer, he seems to be in a art blakey/Philly Joe Jones mood, some brilliant solos and trade offs with band members, this is 1 to /5(27).

    Jack McDuff's organ sound is so soulful, so blues-drenched in its Hard Bop sound that he is nicknamed The Brother. McDuff's style is unique because he often plays his organ more like a piano, with short notes, rather than the long phrases associated with the instrument (think weddings and funerals).

    Brother Jack McDuff, was one of the handful of leading exponents of the soul jazz style created on Hammond organ by Jimmy Smith in the late s. The instrument at the heart of the soul jazz style was the Hammond B-3 organ, usually in the company of electric guitar, drums, and often tenor saxophone.

    This is Brother Jack Mcduff's first recording as a leader, after some stellar work as a sideman for artists like Willis Jackson. Mcduff is joined by alto saxophonist Leo Wright, guitarist Kenny Burrell, who contributed great work to a number of classic Jimmy Smith sides, and the great Joe Dukes, who would later join George Benson and tenor sax stalwart Red Holloway to form Mcduff's great touring band, /5(9).
